A Look-Back to the Social Equity Working Group Meetings

On July 31st through August 3rd, the Equity Team co-facilitated a series of Equity Working Group meetings, along with City staff and other sub-consultants, including Dover Kohl, Toole, Strategic Economics, and others. The topics covered several key areas of focus,which were previously identified in the Downtown Specific Plan planning process:

  • Arts and Culture
  • Built environment and preservation
  • Housing and affordability
  • Open Space and recreation
  • Environmental sustainability
  • Connectivity and access
  • Economic opportunity

Perspectives on Equity: The Equity Team Speaks

The dictionary defines it as “the quality of being fair and impartial,” but equity also has other meanings, such as the value of stock shares, or mortgaged property. There’s also a branch of law associated with fairness and justice, used to remedy inequity in common law practice. Oakland’s Department of Race and Equity views equity as “when people have full and equal access to opportunities that enable them to attain their full potential.” Furthermore, Oakland’s downtown specific plan process now specifically addresses ways local government can promote equity through policy and infrastructure for the built environment at the heart of the city. Social Equity Team Officially Launches With Community Leader Trainings

The Social Equity Team— the informal name describing the consultancy group hired by the City of Oakland’s Planning Department to add a social equity lens to the Downtown Oakland Specific Plan (DOSP) planning process—recently held two Community Leader Training Workshops on June 12 and 15. The workshops were designed to engage community stakeholders identified by the Team in conversation about equity principles, discuss best practices, and inform them of ways they could further involve their constituents in the DOSP process.
